Martha Tyroch: Big spending enemy of Free Speech

This video was pulled from YouTube, under threat from the candidate. I'm a free speech kinda guy myself, and while she won't represent me personally, her behavior in the Texas House of Representatives can definitely effect me.

Including her hostility to free political speech.

You should have thought about the response to your actions, Ms. Tyroch. Put this fire out. From the Empower Texans Newsletter:
Earlier this morning, our weekly e-newsletter included a link to our satirical take on liberal Martha Tyroch's campaign ads, up on our YouTube channel. (Tyroch the Taxer is in a run-off election in House District 55 against Ralph Sheffield. Our PAC has endorsed Sheffield.)

Why? Tyroch is a tax-raising, budget-growing, big-government former mayor pro tem of Temple. Her campaign ad somehow neglected to mention her record on taxes and spending. Probably just an oversight...

No, her campaign doesn't want folks talking about her record of growing taxes and wasting taxpayer money. So in response to our little parody piece, the Tyroch campaign demanded that YouTube pull it down. Never mind the fact that political speech, and especially parody, has been long-considered free speech (and fair use). There is even legal debate over whether political materials can be copyrighted because it is inherently not commercial. But we digress...

Apparently Martha Tyroch and her campaign advisors don't like the First Amendment any more than they like taxpayer protection, property tax relief, or spending restraint. And they sure don't want voters learning about her anti-taxpayer record.
If the video won't play, you can download it directly from the source.

This is also an ethics violation...See http://blogs.chron.com/texaspolitics/archives/2008/03/the_map_at_the.html

Martha Tyroch is scared of her record. She raised taxes and grew government. She prays no one will notice.

I guess I wonder how many people would feel good about being misrepresented during a campaign? It seems to me that Martha Tyroch is taking the high road in her campaign. Maybe the question should be more about what Sheffield brings to the table...why is the focus on discrediting Ms. Tyroch instead of making a statement about what he has to offer?

I don't think her record has been misrepresented. It's a pretty straightforward parody piece.

The feelings of a tax-funded parasite (what all politicians are) are irrelevant. I'll be just as happy to throw darts at Sheffield if he proves to be a disappointment, as I am to throw darts at Tyroch. That is an activists job.

Her willingness to contravene the first amendment in order to silence her detractors is what makes her a bad candidate, not her record by itself. Or rather, her record now includes her distaste for free speech.

Martha Tyroch is not scared of anything and regardless of the outcome I believe that she deserves nothing but the upmost respect for her hard work and sacrafice. She is a great friend, mother, and servant of the community, which I'm sure, is far more than many of the people behind this negativity can say. Martha Tyroch is and always will be far above this unproductive, negative, nonsense.

...which is why her supporters post anonymous comments on blogs that they can't get pulled down when those blogs report her actions truthfully.

It also explains why she got the parody pulled from YouTube, because she is so far above it all.

Sounds like you're in the thick of it from where I'm sitting, Martha.

Speaking of freedom of speech......if everyone here is such an advocate and thinks what Martha did is offensive then why was my last comment removed? Thanks for proving my point.

The new notice explains it:

Ad Hominems Spam and Advertisements will be mercilessly deleted. All other comments are eagerly anticipated.

You attacked the blog owner. Tsk, tsk. The blog owner also has a pet peeve when it comes to anonymous blow hards, which is why you have to log in now to leave a comment.

It's my blog, I make the rules. Go buy YouTube, Martha, and you can tell them what they can and can't do. There's no free speech on private property and since it's not amusing to read about how I suck on my own blog (unless, of course, I write the words myself) I reserve the right to remove any comment I don't care for.

Owner's prerogative.

Go buy YouTube, Martha, and you too can dictate content on your own property. Otherwise, freedom of speech applies in a public forum, which pretty much describes the internet.

I'm sure it's really irritating to you, Martha. I mean, the newspapers check with you before they run stories on you, the TV station clears it's programming with you before they air it.

...and then that upstart YouTube has the gall to just publish a parody of your campaign ad right where millions of people could see it, without so much as asking if they could first. The outrage of it all.

Too bad that calling for it's removal just drew attention to it; and too bad that the new media is defined by it's being outside of any one groups control.

How do you cope?

BTW, Martha, you lost the race already, as detailed here:Impacting City Spending Looks like city budgets will be changing in Temple.

Seriously, I think you have more important things to worry about now.
